Finding My Voice Through Poetry
There are moments in life when ordinary conversations fail us; there is no one to share the deepest thoughts and feelings with; or there is no time! Emotions become too deep, memories too vivid, and questions too profound to be contained within everyday language. For me, poetry has always represented that quiet space where thoughts can breathe, where feelings find their own rhythm, and where silence often speaks louder than words.
Every poem I write begins not with an intention to impress but with a desire to understand, self-evaluate and share. Sometimes I am trying to understand the world around me; at other times, I am trying to understand myself. A fleeting memory, an unexpected encounter, the changing seasons, a familiar face, or a moment of gratitude can all become the seed of a poem. Poetry allows me to preserve those moments before they disappear into the endless ripples of time.
Many readers have discovered my poems on PoemHunter, and I feel deeply grateful that they have chosen to spend a few moments with my words. A poem lives twice—once when it is written and again when it is read. Every reader brings their own experiences, joys, disappointments, hopes, and memories. Because of this, no two people ever read the same poem in exactly the same way. That is one of the greatest gifts poetry offers both the writer and the reader.
When I first began writing, I did not imagine that my poems would travel beyond the quiet pages of my notebook. Writing was never about recognition; it was about reflection. Poetry became my companion through moments of happiness, uncertainty, gratitude, and contemplation. It taught me to observe more carefully and to appreciate the extraordinary beauty hidden within ordinary life.
I have always believed that inspiration is everywhere. It lives in the gentle smile of a child, the comforting wisdom of parents, the resilience of people facing adversity, the calm of early morning, the colours of nature, and even in moments of solitude. The smallest experiences often reveal the greatest truths if we are willing to pause long enough to notice them.
Family has always occupied a special place in my reflections. Our earliest lessons about kindness, sacrifice, compassion, and unconditional love are often learned at home. Parents shape our values in countless ways, sometimes through words and often through quiet examples. Their influence continues long after childhood has passed. Whenever I reflect on family, I am reminded that gratitude is one of the most beautiful emotions we can express.
Time is another subject that frequently occupies my thoughts. We cannot stop its movement, nor can we return to yesterday. Yet every passing year leaves us with stories, memories, and lessons that quietly become part of who we are. Poetry allows me to pause time for just a moment. A single poem can preserve an emotion that might otherwise have faded with the passing seasons.
Some readers ask whether poetry is based entirely on personal experience. My answer is that poetry is often born where observation meets imagination. Sometimes a poem grows from a memory; sometimes it emerges from empathy. We write not only about what we have lived but also about what we have witnessed, imagined, admired, questioned, or hoped for. The heart of poetry lies in emotional truth rather than literal autobiography.
One of the greatest pleasures of writing is discovering that readers often find meanings I never consciously intended. A poem that I wrote while thinking about one experience may remind someone else of their own childhood, their parents, a friend, or a life-changing event. Poetry belongs to the reader as much as it belongs to the poet. Once it is shared, it begins a new journey.
People occasionally ask why many of my poems use straightforward language instead of elaborate literary techniques. My answer is simple: I want ideas and emotions to remain accessible. I have always admired writing that speaks directly to the heart. Simplicity does not mean shallowness. Some of life's deepest truths are expressed in the simplest words.
In today's world, where information arrives faster than we can absorb it, poetry invites us to slow down. It encourages us to notice what we often overlook—a kind gesture, a quiet conversation, the beauty of changing light, or the comfort of cherished memories. Poetry reminds us that life is not measured only by achievements but also by moments of reflection.
‘Nature’ has also been a quiet teacher throughout my writing journey. A tree standing patiently through changing seasons, a bird greeting the morning, the gentle rhythm of rain, or the colours of the evening sky all remind me that change is part of life's natural order. Nature teaches resilience without speaking a single word.
Another theme that continues to inspire me is ‘hope’. Every generation faces uncertainty, challenges, and change. Yet hope has an extraordinary ability to renew the human spirit. I believe poetry should not merely describe difficulties; it should also illuminate possibilities. Even when a poem explores sadness, I hope it leaves the reader with a sense of strength, understanding, or quiet optimism.
Writing poetry has also taught me humility. Every poem is an attempt rather than a final answer. Every new piece begins with a blank page and the uncertainty of whether the right words will come. Sometimes they arrive effortlessly; sometimes they require patience. The creative process reminds me that growth never truly ends. What I find the most awe inspiring aspect of poetry writing is that it can never be re-written! It’s like you can’t ‘revisit’ the same dream! It’s not within your clasp. The ideas and the thoughts remain but their rendering can never be the same, in my personal point of view. This makes each poem a unique gem in the purview of your mental horizon, none being the same as another. I would never be able to reproduce the same poem on the same topic. It’s like the pouring of the heart and the mind can never be refilled! They are like a river that cannot be retracted to its source, except certainly after undergoing the cycle of metamorphosis and pouring down from the skies!
Publishing poems online has been a rewarding experience because it allows literature to cross geographical boundaries. Readers from different countries, cultures, and backgrounds bring unique interpretations to the same work. Although we may speak different languages or live different lives, emotions such as love, gratitude, loss, hope, and compassion unite us all. Poetry quietly reminds us of our shared humanity.
I am especially grateful to every reader who pauses long enough to leave a thoughtful comment or simply returns to read another poem. Writers often spend long periods working in solitude, but every reader transforms that solitary experience into a conversation. Literature has always been a bridge between hearts, and every shared poem strengthens that bridge.
To aspiring poets, I offer only one piece of advice: write honestly. Do not chase fashionable styles or attempt to imitate another voice. Read widely, observe carefully, listen deeply, and trust your own perspective. Every individual experiences the world differently, and those differences are what give literature its richness. The most memorable poems are often those that remain faithful to the writer's authentic voice.
I also believe that reading poetry is just as important as writing it. Every poet is first a reader. The works of great poets remind us that language possesses remarkable power—not only to describe the world but also to transform the way we see it. Reading broadens our imagination, deepens our empathy, and enriches our understanding of ourselves.
As I continue writing, I remain a student of life. Every conversation teaches something new. Every challenge offers another lesson. Every sunrise brings another opportunity to observe, appreciate, and create. Poetry has become my way of preserving these experiences, one reflection at a time.
If my poems encourage even one reader to pause, remember a loved one, appreciate nature, find hope during a difficult season, or simply look at life with greater kindness, then they have fulfilled their purpose. Poetry is not only about words arranged on a page; it is about the quiet conversations those words begin within the reader's heart.
Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to visit my poetry on PoemHunter. Your interest, encouragement, and thoughtful reflections inspire me to continue exploring the endless possibilities of language. Every poem marks another step in an ongoing journey—a journey of observation, gratitude, imagination, and hope.
As long as life continues to offer moments of wonder, questions without easy answers, and opportunities for compassion, I know there will always be another poem waiting to be written. And I hope that, somewhere along the way, those poems continue to find readers who recognise a part of their own story within mine.
